Amenorrhea (No Periods) -Overview.

Description:

Amenorrhea is a condition that is characterised by the lack of menstrual periods in women of childbearing age. It may be primary (when a young woman has not yet begun her menstrual cycle by the age of 1516) or secondary (when her periods cease completely, and she has already had regular menstrual cycle periods). Amenorrhea may signify some underlying hormonal, reproductive, or even systemic problems and may have an impact on fertility in its untreated state.

Types of Amenorrhea

Primary Amenorrhea- The absence of menstruation at age 15-16, usually because of genetic or developmental defects.

Secondary Amenorrhea -Stopping of periods in women who have had normal cycles, usually during stress or hormonal disturbances or in medical conditions.

Common Causes

Disproportions of hormones: Thyroid, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), prolactin.

Elevation or reduction in stress or weight: An extreme stress or excessive weight loss, or eating disorders.

Pregnancy or breastfeeding -Natural causes of temporary absence of periods.
