The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front portion of the neck. It makes hormones (T3 – triiodothyronine and T4 – thyroxine) which help control metabolism, energy, growth, and body temperature.

Thyroid disorders occur when the gland either over- or under-produces hormones, causing several health issues in the process.

Common Thyroid Disorders

Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid)

The thyroid produces too little hormone.

Causes include: Hashimoto's disease, iodine deficiency, surgery, and medications.

Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin, constipation, and depression.

Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid)

The thyroid produces too much hormone.

Causes: Graves’ disease, thyroid nodules, thyroiditis.

Symptoms: Weight loss, rapid heart rate, nervousness, heat intolerance, tremors, goitre.

Goiter

Enlargement of the thyroid.

Causes: Iodine deficiency, autoimmune disease, nodules.

Symptoms: Neck swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing if large.

Thyroid Nodules

Lumps in the thyroid.

Causes: Cysts, benign tumours, sometimes cancer.

Symptoms: Often asymptomatic; may cause neck pressure.

Thyroid Cancer

Malignant growth in thyroid tissue.

Symptoms include the following: Lump in the neck, hoarseness, and difficulty swallowing.

Treatment: Surgery, radioactive iodine, hormone therapy.

Prevention
1. Nutrition

Adequate iodine intake should be ensured through the consumption of iodised salt, dairy, and seafood.

Incorporate selenium and zinc for thyroid health.

Avoid excessive raw goitrogenic foods if iodine intake is low (e.g., raw cabbage, soy).

2. Healthy Lifestyle

Eat a balanced diet.

Exercise regularly to help your body's metabolic processes.

Manage stress levels, as stress impairs thyroid function.

3. Medical Check-ups

Regular thyroid function tests (TSH, T3, T4), especially for:

Women above 35

Pregnant women

Those with a family medical history of thyroid disorders

4. Awareness

Know the early signs of thyroid disorders.

Fatigue, changes in weight, heat/cold intolerance

Neck swelling or lumps

Changes in hair, skin, or heart rate
