Osteoporosis Treatment in Indore

Dr Bansal's Women's Health Clinic

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones are weak and brittle, making them break easily. It occurs when your body loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or both.

It is often called a "silent disease" because bone loss occurs gradually and may not be noticed until a fracture occurs, commonly in the hip, spine, or wrist.

⚠️ Risk Factors

Non-modifiable (cannot change):

The risk is higher after the age of 50

Female sex, especially post-menopause, due to reduced estrogen

Family history of osteoporosis or fractures

Ethnicity- Higher risk in Caucasians and Asians

Modifiable (can be managed):

Low intake of calcium and vitamin D

Sedentary lifestyle

Smoking

Excessive intake of alcohol

Certain medications (e.g., corticosteroids)

Low body weight or eating disorders

Symptoms

Often asymptomatic in early stages

Back pain due to a fractured or collapsed vertebra

Loss of height due to ageing

Stooped posture (kyphosis)

Bones susceptible to fractures

Prevention
1. Nutrition

Calcium-rich foods: Milk, yoghurt, cheese, leafy green vegetables, almonds

Vitamin D: sun exposure, fortified foods, supplements if necessary

Protein: Contributes to the maintenance of bone structure

Avoid salt and caffeine, which can increase calcium loss

2. Exercise

Weight-bearing exercises include the following: walking, jogging, dancing, stair climbing

Resistance training: Weightlifting or resistance bands

Balance and posture exercises: yoga, tai chi, to reduce fall risk

3. Lifestyle Choices

Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption.

Maintain a healthy body weight

Prevent falls at home: remove tripping hazards and ensure good lighting

4. Medical Measures

Bone density testing, DEXA scan for women over 65 and men over 70 or at risk

Depending on the severity and individual risk factors for fractures, medications such as bisphosphonates, hormone therapy, or selective estrogen receptor modulators may be indicated.
